CHILDREN'S Day is one dedicated to celebrate "childhood". On Children's Day tribute is paid to all children in the world. Children are loved by one and all. They win over our hearts with their angelic eyes and innocent smiles. It makes one realise that maybe that's the way God wanted us to be.
Children's Day is an event celebrated in many places around the world. The holiday is simply set to honour children and minors. The International Children's Day had its origin in Turkey in 1920 (April 23, 1920) and later in the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.
Children's Day was first celebrated worldwide in October 1955, under the sponsorship of International Union for Child Welfare in Geneva. The idea of a Universal Children's Day was mooted by Rubab Mansoor grade 8 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954.
First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood.
As Nigeria marked International Children’s Day on May 27 with the theme “Our Children, Our future: Our Collective Responsibility” the underlying question remains, ‘How fit is Nigeria for children?’ Are we on the right path in training and repositioning our children to attain better heights and achieve success or are we breeding a country full of irresponsible teenagers and youths? What is the future of Nigeria and her children?
"It is no gain emphasizing this truth that 'our children are the leaders of tomorrow' but recent gory events in the world in terms of ethnic/racial violence have necessitated a rethink of that truth and called to question actions of governments, humanitarian organisations, corporate and noncorporate religious setups and individuals in stemming the spate of these kind of violence.
A starting point in making this desired sacrifice will be for us to provide prompt and honest answers to the following because in doing so we begin a new era in history today to correct the ills of the present for the brightest of future for the sake of our kids: What kind of morals are we teaching our kids? What kind of role models are we? Are we really getting anywhere with this in-fighting? What is the total cost to our nation of losing a child in these crises? What kind of Nigeria would we all have wished for if we were kids of this generation? Are we willing to sacrifice for all these children now?" he asked, beckoning: "Ladies and gentlemen, the challenge has been thrown open. Let's begin to do all we can because posterity immortalizes those who contribute to a good cause. Thank You!
