Happy Children's Day From the Co-Founder of Club Compass Monsieur Fred Odeigah

Our Children, Our future: Our Collective Responsibility.

Happy Children’s Day celebration

CHILDREN'S Day is one dedicated to celebrate "childhood". On Children's Day tribute is paid to all children in the world. Children are loved by one and all. They win over our hearts with their angelic eyes and innocent smiles. It makes one realise that maybe that's the way God wanted us to be.
Children's Day is an event celebrated in many places around the world. The holiday is simply set to honour children and minors. The International Children's Day had its origin in Turkey in 1920 (April 23, 1920) and later in the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.
Children's Day was first celebrated worldwide in October 1955, under the sponsorship of International Union for Child Welfare in Geneva. The idea of a Universal Children's Day was mooted by Rubab Mansoor grade 8 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954.
First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood.
As Nigeria marked International Children’s Day on May 27 with the theme “Our Children, Our future: Our Collective Responsibility” the underlying question remains, ‘How fit is Nigeria for children?’ Are we on the right path in training and repositioning our children to attain better heights and achieve success or are we breeding a country full of irresponsible teenagers and youths? What is the future of Nigeria and her children?
"It is no gain emphasizing this truth that 'our children are the leaders of tomorrow' but recent gory events in the world in terms of ethnic/racial violence have necessitated a rethink of that truth and called to question actions of governments, humanitarian organisations, corporate and noncorporate  religious setups and individuals in stemming the spate of these kind of violence.

A starting point in making this desired sacrifice will be for us to provide prompt and honest answers to the following because in doing so we begin a new era in history today to correct the ills of the present for the brightest of future for the sake of our kids: What kind of morals are we teaching our kids? What kind of role models are we? Are we really getting anywhere with this in-fighting? What is the total cost to our nation of losing a child in these crises? What kind of Nigeria would we all have wished for if we were kids of this generation? Are we willing to sacrifice for all these children now?" he asked, beckoning: "Ladies and gentlemen, the challenge has been thrown open. Let's begin to do all we can because posterity immortalizes those who contribute to a good cause. Thank You!

Happy Children’s Day Celebration to the Nigerian Child.

In the Courtroom

In a courtroom, a lawyer called
his first witness who
happens to be an elderly woman
to the stand.

He went to her and asked, "Mam
do you know me?"

She responded,
"Why, yes I do know u Mr Pollus.
I've known you
since you were
a young boy, and to be frank,
you have been a big disappointment to your parents
and to the society.
You are a liar, you cheat people
including your wife,
and you manipulate people and
talk about them behind their backs. you think you
are a big man
when you don't even have
brains. Yes, I know you!"

The lawyer was stunned! Not
knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room
and asked,
"Mam, do you know the defence
lawyer?"

She replied,
"yes, I do. I have known Mr Gideon since he was a
young boy too. He has been your
very good friend
since childhood because the two
of you have the
same character. He has also been a very lazy man
and he has a drinking problem.
Infact he is a
criminal and he can't even build a
normal
relationship with anyone and his law practice is one
of the worst in the entire state.
Not to mention he
cheated on his wife with 3
different women, one of
them was your wife. Yes, I know him. The defence
lawyer almost fainted.

The Judge called both lawyers to his table
and in a very quiet
voice, said, "If any of you idiots asks her if
she knows me, I'll make sure you loose your license."

Today is a beautiful day

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognised his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way. "I wrote: 'Today is a beautiful day; but I cannot see it.'"Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded people how fortunate they were to have their sight.

Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile.

Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear. It's a beautiful thing to see a person smiling. But even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason for the smile!Faith is not about everything turning out OK. Faith is about being OK no matter how things turn out. Never give up hope nor faith! Thank You!

Why Should You Eat Fruits & Vegetables by Monsieur Fred Odeigah

Veggies are an important part of everyone's diet. They contain dozens of important nutrients and have loads of dietary fiber. And just by getting your daily quota of five to nine servings, you help build your body's immunity to things like cancer, heart disease and diabetes and other common illness.

Here are 10 reasons why you should eat more fruits and vegetables.
1. Fruits and vegetables are good for your health. They are packed with vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants, which help to eliminate harmful free radicals called oxidants that result from the oxidation process. Free radicals are believed to contribute to a host of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Antioxidants also may help to boost the immune system.
2. There is something for everyone in the world of fruits and vegetables so arguing that you "don't like them" doesn't cut it. The variety of fruits and vegetables on grocery store shelves and markets  today is astounding, so you are sure to find some that you enjoy.
3. Adding fruits and vegetables to your diet is easy, even if you don't have the time, energy or inclination to cook, since many fruits and vegetables can be eaten raw. Just wash them well and enjoy. As a result, they are great for busy people who don't have a lot of time for food preparation.
4. They can help you stick to a weight-loss or weight-maintenance diet, since they are filling and, in many instances, have surprisingly few calories. Two medium-sized fresh apricots have only about 34 calories, five medium asparagus spears have only 16 calories, and a medium sized apple has less than 75 calories.
5. Many fruits and vegetables are packed with fiber, which is good for your digestive health. It is recommended that on average you should get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day. A medium apple has about 3.3 grams of fiber and a medium banana has about 3.1 grams of fiber, so eating just one apple or one banana will provide about 10% of your daily fiber requirement.
6. Eating more fruits and vegetables will make you a good role model for your kids. You will have more credibility when you tell them to have an apple not a cookie as an afternoon snack if you have an apple in your hand.
7. Fruits and vegetables are delicious. Try one out today and discover for yourself.
8. They are versatile. They can be eaten at any meal and at any time of the day, and they can be prepared any way you like, baked, fried, broiled, grilled, sautéed, boiled, microwaved or pureed, and, of course, many can be eaten raw. As a result of their versatility, they can find a place in any meal and any course.
9. You probably are not getting the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that most people eat at least 3 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. So start eating some immediately.
10. Eating more locally grown fruits and vegetables helps to support your local economy and your local farmers. In addition, it is good for the environment, because less energy is used to get these products to the local market than those grown elsewhere. You'll be improving your economy by eating, buying or even planting vegetables.
Start eating does fruit salad today...and you will never regret it! Thanks.

FACE DIFFICULTIES POSITIVELY

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbours together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbours continued shovelling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him, all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity we will come out of them victorious.

Wisdom is nothing but earthly commonsense

An old villager was travelling along a narrow path which cut through thick vegetation. He had never been to school. He could neither read nor write. Yet everyone in the village considered him a wise man. He was indeed wise. He knew a lot about human nature. But he always had time to gather more wisdom. He did that by keeping his eyes and ears open.

The music of birds caught his ears as he walked along the path. A folk tune came to his mind. He hummed it, swung the cane in his hand to provide the beats for the music.

Then his eyes fell on the leaves of edible plants which stood on either side. Some animal had eaten up the leaves of plants on the right side, but not of plants to the left.
"Ah, he told himself. Its right eye must be blind." He walked a few more steps when he found footprints of the animal. Not all footprints were equally firm and clear. The villager searched for the reason. Then the truth struck him. The animal was lame in one leg.

Which leg? The villager sought. He studied the imprints. Then he told himself, "It's the hind leg, the left one that is short." A further study proved that the animal was a horse. The footprints were not deep. The old villager mumbled. "Nobody was riding the horse. It must have strayed." Hardly had he put all the facts together when a scholarly looking man ran in. He asked the villager, "Did you see my horse?"

The villager asked, "Your horse? Is it blind in the right eye?" The new comer exclaimed, "You are right! How did you know?"  The villager enquired, "Does it limp on its hind leg . . . the left leg?"
"Of course. That is my horse. Where is it?" The man asked. "How do I know? I never set eyes on your horse," the villager replied.

That made the man angry. He shouted, "You have stolen my horse. Give it back to me. Or I will complain to the village chief." "Do it. I am not afraid. I am no thief," the villager growled. "Come with me. We will go to the chief," the man dragged the old man along.

The chief heard the complaint. Then he asked the old villager, "What do you have to say?" The villager explained how he had found out details about the horse. The chief growled at the complainant, "Go and find out your horse yourself. Don't waste time making false complaints." Then he smiled at the villager and said, "Society needs people like you." The wise man commented, "wisdom is nothing but earthly common sense  One needs to only look around carefully to find out facts."

Life Still Has A Meaning

If there is a future there is time for mending-
Time to see your troubles coming to an ending.

Life is never hopeless however great your sorrow-
If you're looking forward to a new tomorrow.

If there is time for wishing then there is time for hoping-
When through doubt and darkness you are blindly groping.

Though the heart be heavy and hurt you may be feeling-
If there is time for praying there is time for healing.

So if through your window there is a new day breaking-
Thank God for the promise, though mind and soul be aching,

If with harvest over there is grain enough for gleaning-
There is a new tomorrow and life still has meaning.

PLANT a SEED

It is better to light candles
than to curse the darkness.

It is better to plant seeds
than to accuse the earth.

The world needs all of our power
and love and energy,
and each of us has something that we can give.

The trick is to find it and use it,
to find it and give it away.
So there will always be more.

We can be lights for each other,
and through each other's illumination
we will see the way.

Each of us is a seed,
a silent promise,
and it is always spring."

ASK

I asked God to take away my pain.
God said, No.
It is not for me to take away,
but for you to give it up.

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, No.
Patience is a by-product of tribulations,
it isn't granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, No.
I give you blessings,
Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me suffering.
God said, No.
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares
and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, No.
You must grow on your own,
but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No.
I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.

I ask God to help me love others, as much as he loves me.
God said...
Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

The Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily, gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said "you have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one." You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. Make sure you control your temper the next time you are tempted to say something you will regret later.

“It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.”

Pencil and Eraser

Pencil: I'm sorry
Eraser: For what? You didn't do anything wrong.

Pencil: I'm sorry because you get hurt because of me. Whenever I made a mistake, you're always there to erase it. But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself. You get smaller and smaller each time.

Eraser: That's true. But I don't really mind. You see, I was made to do this. I was made to help you whenever you do something wrong. Even though one day, I know I'll be gone and you'll replace me with a new one, I'm actually happy with my job. So please, stop worrying. I hate seeing you sad.

I found this conversation between the pencil and the eraser very inspirational. Parents are like the eraser whereas their children are the pencil. They're always there for their children, cleaning up their mistakes. Sometimes along the way, they get hurt, and become smaller / older, and eventually pass on. Though their children will eventually find someone new (spouse), but parents are still happy with what they do for their children, and will always hate seeing their precious ones worrying, or sad. All my life, I've been the pencil. And it pains me to see the eraser that is my parents getting smaller and smaller each day. For I know that one day, all that I'm left with would be eraser shavings and memories of what I used to have.

CLUB-COMPASS

Ten Health Tips for Teachers Composed by Monsieur Fred Odeigah

Ten Health Tips for Teachers
Educators escort
It's that time of year when teachers must once again leave the comfort of the holiday behind and get back to the routine of helping, loving, and teaching young children. Although, teaching is not considered a dangerous profession, it is very important that teachers take the time to do some very simple things to guarantee a smooth and healthy transition back to school.

These important health tips for teachers can make a huge difference for a successful and healthy school year.

1.    EAT WELL IN YOUR DAY TO DAY RUSH TO GET TO SCHOOL:
Don't skip a well-balanced breakfast which fuels your day and help you stay focused on the students. Likewise, skip the standard school cafeteria fare and pack a wholesome lunch that will keep you energized throughout the afternoon. Nothing against school lunch, but school lunches were made for kids and sometimes just don't do teachers justice. Fruits and a delicious dinner can help support your immune system and give you a strong nutrient base which is beneficial to all teachers and workers in a school environment.

2.    GET PLENTY OF REST:
As a teacher, you're probably inclined to work late, stay up at night grading papers, and spend late hours preparing lessons for your students. Do not go overboard. Plan a schedule and work your plan. In order to deal with any student regardless of the age, you need your rest. Proper rest will have you refreshed each morning to take on all challenges that will come your way during a normal school day.

3.    WASH YOUR HANDS:
As a teacher, think about how many people and places your hands come in contact with during the course of just one single school day, not to mention the handshakes and materials. Hand washing is essential in not contacting and spreading all the little bugs and germs that teachers encounter. A great strategy is to keep a sizable bottle of hand sanitizer in your drawer or by your table.

USE THOSE TISSUES:
Keep that box of tissue near your desk. For every little sneeze and sniffle, tissue comes in really handy and helps to combat those little nasty things that come and go in the school house.

4.    KEEP MOVING:
All teachers know there is never a dull moment in the field of education. Things are always moving. An excellent health tip for teachers is to keep moving through exercise. A morning walk or a few minutes in the gym can be just what you need to keep your stress level down or provide that extra boost to your metabolism. Even if you don't have much time, there are many exercises that you can do during the school day.

5.    SUPPLEMENT YOUR WORK:
Teachers often find those little extra things to supplement their pay like a coaching job or part-time work, but a vitamin and mineral supplement works best for supplementing your health. While you might eat well balanced meals, it is not a bad idea to take a multivitamin or some type of healthy herbal supplement. Consult with a nutritionist or your doctor to find out which supplements can provide you with energy and other helpful benefits.

6.    GET AWAY FROM SCHOOL:
Although teaching may be your absolute passion, the best healthy tip for a teacher might just happen to be getting away from school. Take time for yourself on a regular basis to recharge your engine. Find a way to spend some quality time (at least once a month) doing something special for you. A visit to the spa, a hike in the mountains, or a weekend at the beach can make a world of difference in your overall physical and emotional health. You will be amazed at how well you will feel after a nice trip away from the normal hustle and bustle of school. Teachers are known for taking care of their students, but it is most important that you take care of yourself.

7.    DEDICATE A NO-WORK WEEKEND DAY:
Educators often find themselves taking work home. Duties spill into the evening as well as weekend hours. Find a way to dedicate at least one weekend per month, or one Sunday each week, as a no work day. Use this day for yourself. By allotting a no-work day you might even find a shift in your efficiency. When we realize that we do not have the leisure of the entire weekend to complete a project or assignment, it's amazing how our production and efficiency adapts. In turn, learn to love not working, if even for a moment. Being a well-rounded and healthy educator also requires knowing how to balance your timetable amidst the busy schedule.
8.

DRINK WATER BEFORE EACH MEAL AND/OR SNACK:
Many of us are dehydrated and the hunger signals we are receiving are false. It is suggested by many sources that adults should drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day, not to be replaced with coffee, tea, soda or juice.
9.

DON'T PUT SLEEP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST:
Sleep is not just necessary, it's good for you. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you get less than 6-7 hours of sleep per evening, you are creating what researchers now call a "sleep debt". And this lack of sleep has been shown to complicate many illnesses, can cause behavioral problems in and is linked to obesity, headaches, depression, accelerated aging, and a potential risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

In conclusion
LAUGH A LOT! AND LAUGH MORE because a merry heart doeth good like a medicine
Laughing relaxes the body and has been purported to reduce problems associated with high blood pressure, strokes, arthritis, and ulcers. Recent studies suggest that a good sense of humor and the ability to laugh at stressful situations helps alleviate the damaging physical effects of distressing emotions. A good, hearty laugh may help reduce stress, boost the immune system, lessen inflammation, lower blood pressure, lighten your mood, connect you to others, and foster good will. And when it's all said and done, with a smile on your face, you will feel better!

UNIQUE AND UNREPEATABLE

“A HUMAN BEING IS A SINGLE BEING.
UNIQUE AND UNREPEATABLE.”
Eileen Caddy (1917–2006),
Egyptian-born author

IMMUNE SYSTEM
Unless you are an identical twin, white blood cells in the body’s immune system are unique to you. These cells can tell your cells apart from all of the others. That is why when a foreign cell, such as a germ, enters your body, your white blood cells identify it as an invader and go on the attack, engulfing and digesting it.

FINGERPRINTS
Patterns on your fingerprints are unique. They stay the same throughout your life, and if you injure the skin’s surface, the same prints grow back. Fingerprints were first used in 14th-century Persia (modern-day Iran), where it was normal to add a print to official documents. Today, in the U.S. alone, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) holds a copy of more than 50 million people’s prints.

As we grow as unique persons, we learn to respect the uniqueness of others.

Robert H. Schuller

Iris
The colored area of your eye is called the iris. Each iris is a unique blend of stripes and gaps. At the age of ten months, the human iris is fully formed and remains the same. Iris- recognition technology scans the iris to produce a unique pattern similar to a bar code, which can be used for individual identification.

Originality is a by-product of sincerity.
~Marianne Moore

FACIAL STRUCTURE
You're not just a pretty face. The arrangement of your facial features is unique to you. Cameras can capture a face in an image, and then an operator figures out coordinates from the features, such as the distance between the corners of the eyes and the hairline pattern.  The list of measurements is used to create a unique facial formula to identify people for security reasons.

Be yourself! An Original is always worth more than a copy.
